Instagram Post Sizes: Feed, Grid, Stories and Reels
Make Instagram photos 1080 px wide. 1080 × 1350 px (4:5) is the usual feed size, 1080 × 1440 px (3:4) is the tallest Instagram keeps and the shape of your profile grid, and Stories and Reels are 1080 × 1920 px (9:16).

Feed post sizes
Instagram keeps a photo's shape if it is between 1.91:1 (wide) and 3:4 (tall). At 1080 px wide, that means a height from 566 to 1440 px. Anything taller or wider is cropped to fit.
Width matters too. Instagram keeps photos between 320 and 1080 px wide at their own size. It shrinks wider photos to 1080 px and enlarges narrower ones to 320 px. So save at exactly 1080 px wide.
Taller posts take up more of the screen in the feed. 4:5 has been the usual portrait size for years. Instagram's Help Center now gives 3:4 as the tallest shape it keeps, and 3:4 is also the shape of the profile grid, so a 3:4 post shows whole in both places.
| Post shape | Upload at | What Instagram does |
|---|---|---|
| Portrait 4:5 | 1080 × 1350 px | Keeps it as it is. The usual portrait size. |
| Tall 3:4 | 1080 × 1440 px | Keeps it as it is. The tallest shape Instagram keeps. |
| Square 1:1 | 1080 × 1080 px | Keeps it as it is. Takes less room in the feed than portrait. |
| Landscape 1.91:1 | 1080 × 566 px | Keeps it as it is. The smallest post in the feed. |
| Taller than 3:4 (a 9:16 photo) | Fit it on a 3:4 or 4:5 frame | Crops it to a supported shape. |
| Wider than 1.91:1 (a panorama) | Fit it on a frame, or split it | Crops it to a supported shape. |
The 3:4 profile grid
Your profile grid shows every post as a 3:4 rectangle, not a square. Instagram tested this from August 2024 and switched everyone over in January 2025. The full post still shows when someone taps it.
The grid keeps the middle of each post. A 4:5 post loses a thin strip at each side. A square post loses a quarter of its width. A landscape post loses most of its sides. A 9:16 Reel shows only its middle 1080 × 1440 px.
If you plan a grid where photos line up across tiles, make the tiles 3:4. Square tiles made for the old grid no longer join up.
| Post | Size | What the grid hides |
|---|---|---|
| Tall 3:4 | 1080 × 1440 px | Nothing: shown whole |
| Portrait 4:5 | 1080 × 1350 px | 34 px off each side (6% hidden) |
| Square 1:1 | 1080 × 1080 px | 135 px off each side (25% hidden) |
| Landscape 1.91:1 | 1080 × 566 px | 328 px off each side (61% hidden) |
| Reel or Reel cover 9:16 | 1080 × 1920 px | 240 px off the top and bottom (25% hidden) |
Carousels
A carousel holds up to 20 photos and videos. They all get one shape: the one you choose when you post, which starts as the first photo's shape. A landscape photo in a portrait carousel loses its sides.
Give every slide the same size before you post, at the sizes above. The profile grid shows only the first slide, cropped to 3:4.
For a panorama that scrolls across slides, cut one wide image into equal slides. Each slide must be exactly the post size, or the join shows.
| Carousel | Figure |
|---|---|
| Slides per post | Up to 20 photos and videos, mixed |
| Slide shape | One shape for all slides, 1.91:1 to 3:4 |
| Profile grid | Shows the first slide, cropped to 3:4 |
| Videos in a carousel | Not treated as Reels |
| 2-slide panorama (4:5) | 2160 × 1350 px |
| 3-slide panorama (4:5) | 3240 × 1350 px |
| 5-slide panorama (4:5) | 5400 × 1350 px |
Stories and Reels: size and safe zones
Stories and Reels fill a phone screen at 9:16. Make them 1080 × 1920 px. Meta's Ads Guide now suggests 1440 × 2560 px for Reels ads. That is the same shape, so either works.
Instagram draws its own buttons and text over the picture. On a Reel, the username, caption and audio sit along the bottom, and the like, comment and share buttons run down the right. On a Story, the progress bar and name sit at the top and the reply box at the bottom. Keep text and faces out of those areas.
Reels can be up to 20 minutes long. Instagram's Help Center says Reels over 3 minutes aren't recommended to people who don't follow you.
| Format | Top | Bottom | Right | Left |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reels | 220 px | 400 px | 180 px | 60 px |
| Stories | 250 px | 250 px | 60 px | 60 px |
| Reels ads | 269 px | 672 px | 180 px | 65 px |
| Stories ads | 269 px | 672 px | 65 px | 65 px |
Reel covers
Make a Reel cover 1080 × 1920 px, the same as the Reel. The Reels tab shows all of it. Your profile grid shows only the middle 1080 × 1440 px, so 240 px come off the top and bottom.
Put the title and faces inside that middle 1080 × 1440 px. Keep them away from the edges too: the grid tile is small, and text near its edge is hard to read.
On the grid a cover is only a few centimetres tall on a phone, so make any text on it large and short.
| Where | What shows | Size |
|---|---|---|
| Reels tab and full screen | The whole cover | 1080 × 1920 px |
| Profile grid | The middle 3:4 | 1080 × 1440 px (240 px off the top and bottom) |
Profile picture
Instagram doesn't publish a profile picture size. It is widely reported to keep it at 320 × 320 px, and a 1080 × 1080 px upload stays sharp after its compression.
It is shown as a circle, so the corners of your square photo are cut off. When you have a Story up, a coloured ring is drawn around it, over the outer edge. Keep your face in the middle with some space around it.
Threads uses the same circle, and you can bring your Instagram photo across. For WhatsApp, LinkedIn and the rest, see our profile picture sizes guide.
File types, limits, and why uploads go blurry
- Too wide: Instagram shrinks anything over 1080 px wide, and its resize can soften fine detail. Save at exactly 1080 px wide.
- Too small: photos under 320 px wide are enlarged, which makes them soft. Screenshots of screenshots get worse each time.
- Wrong shape: a photo outside 1.91:1 to 3:4 is cropped and resized. Fit it on a frame of the right shape first.
- Already compressed: a photo saved from WhatsApp or another app has lost detail before Instagram compresses it again. Post the original from your camera roll.
- Colour: Instagram expects sRGB. Photos exported in another colour space can look dull or shifted. Most phone photos are fine.
- Instagram re-compresses every upload and publishes no quality setting to aim under, so no app can promise to skip that step. Instagram's own help page suggests using the latest version of the app and a photo at least 1080 px wide.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best size for an Instagram post in 2026?
1080 × 1350 px (4:5) is the usual choice. 1080 × 1440 px (3:4) is now allowed too: it is a little taller in the feed and shows whole on your profile grid. Keep the width at 1080 px either way.
Why does Instagram crop my photos on my profile?
Since January 2025 the profile grid shows posts as 3:4 rectangles. Square and landscape posts lose their sides on the grid, and 4:5 posts lose a thin strip. The whole photo still shows when someone opens the post. Post at 3:4 if you want the grid to show everything.
Can carousel slides be different sizes?
No. Every slide in a carousel gets the same shape, so a landscape photo in a portrait carousel is cropped. Fit each photo on a frame of the same size first. A carousel takes up to 20 photos and videos.
What size is an Instagram Reel cover?
1080 × 1920 px, the same as the Reel. Keep the title inside the middle 1080 × 1440 px, because that is all the profile grid shows.
Why are my Instagram photos blurry after uploading?
Usually because the photo was resized or cropped on the way in. Instagram shrinks photos wider than 1080 px, enlarges ones under 320 px, crops shapes outside 1.91:1 to 3:4, and re-compresses everything. Save at 1080 px wide in a supported shape, and post the original rather than a copy forwarded on WhatsApp.
What is the Instagram DP size?
Instagram doesn't publish one. Upload a square photo at 1080 × 1080 px; Instagram is widely reported to keep it at 320 × 320 px and shows it as a circle.
