Profile Picture Sizes for Every Platform
Every app stores your profile picture as a square and shows it as a circle, usually tiny. Upload a sharp square at the size below, with your face in the middle, and it will look right everywhere.

Profile picture sizes, platform by platform
Only Facebook, X and YouTube publish a size for personal profile pictures; LinkedIn publishes one for company Page logos. For the rest, the sizes below are the ones widely used, and the table says which is which.
Bigger is rarely a problem. Every app scales your photo down to the size it needs. A photo that is too small is the real risk, because it is enlarged and goes soft.
| Platform | Shown at | Upload | Official size? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Not published; a small circle | 1080 × 1080 px | No. Widely reported to be kept at 320 × 320 px | |
| Circle in chats, full square when opened | 640 × 640 px | Not for personal accounts. Meta's business docs recommended 640 × 640 | |
| 176 × 176 px on computers, 196 × 196 px on phones | 320 × 320 px | Yes, Meta Help Centre | |
| Not published | 400 × 400 px | Only for company Page logos (400 × 400) | |
| X | Not published | 400 × 400 px | Yes, X Help Center |
| YouTube | 98 × 98 px | 800 × 800 px | Render size yes; 800 × 800 was YouTube's earlier advice |
| TikTok | Not published | 200 × 200 px | No. The size commonly used |
| Threads | Not published | 1080 × 1080 px | No. Same photo as Instagram if you import it |
| Discord | Not published | 128 × 128 px | No. The commonly quoted minimum |
| Not published | 800 × 800 px | No. Guides give 165 × 165 to 800 × 800 | |
| Telegram | Served at 160 × 160 and 640 × 640 | 640 × 640 px | From Telegram's developer docs |
WhatsApp DP size
WhatsApp doesn't publish a size for personal accounts. Meta's older business documentation recommended 640 × 640 px and said WhatsApp scales profile photos to a square no larger than that, so anything bigger is simply scaled down. Many guides still quote 500 × 500, which works but is less sharp.
WhatsApp shows your DP as a circle in the chat list, but as a full square when someone taps it. So frame your face for the circle and keep the corners tidy as well.
Want the whole photo without the crop, for example a group photo? Fit it inside the square on a plain or blurred background. The Profile Picture Maker has an option to zoom out and fit the whole photo.
Circle or square: how each app crops it
Almost every app shows the picture as a circle cut from the middle of your square. The circle loses the four corners, about 21% of the picture.
A few places use a square. WhatsApp shows the full square when someone opens your picture. X shows square pictures for verified organisations. LinkedIn company Page logos are square.
| Platform | Shape | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Circle | A coloured ring goes round it when you have a Story up | |
| Circle, square when opened | A ring shows in Updates when you post a Status | |
| Circle | A ring shows when you have a story up | |
| Circle | Company Page logos are square | |
| X | Circle | Square for verified organisations |
| YouTube | Circle | Very small next to comments and videos |
| TikTok | Circle | Shown small next to every video and comment |
| Threads | Circle | Can be imported from Instagram |
| Discord | Circle | The online status dot sits over the bottom right |
| Circle | Shown small on your profile and boards | |
| Telegram | Circle | Can be a short looping video |
File types and size limits
JPG suits photos. PNG suits logos and text: Facebook's help suggests PNG for those, as edges stay crisp. Keep the file under 2 MB and it fits every limit that is published here.
| Platform | File types | Maximum file size |
|---|---|---|
| X | JPG, GIF or PNG | 2 MB |
| YouTube | JPG, GIF, BMP or PNG (not animated) | 15 MB |
| JPG or PNG | 8 MB for members (as reported); 3 MB for Page logos | |
| Discord | PNG or GIF (animated needs Nitro) | Not published |
| JPG or PNG | Not published (5 MB in Meta's business docs) | |
| JPG or PNG | Not published | |
| Instagram, Threads, TikTok, Pinterest, Telegram | JPG or PNG | Not published |
Tips for a profile picture that works small
- Centre your face. The circle is cut from the middle of the square, so a face off to one side gets clipped.
- Leave headroom. Keep a little space above your head and around your face so the circle doesn't clip your hair or chin.
- Story and status rings cover the edge. Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp draw a ring round your picture when you have a Story or Status up, so nothing important should sit at the very edge.
- Keep the bottom right clear on Discord: the online status dot sits over it.
- Check it tiny. Most people see it at around 32 to 56 px, next to a comment or in a chat list. Our tool previews it at 32, 56 and 110 px.
- Use a close crop and a plain background. A face that fills most of the circle is still recognisable when small; a full-length photo is not.
- Use the same photo everywhere. People recognise you faster across apps.
Frequently asked questions
What is the WhatsApp DP size?
WhatsApp doesn't publish one for personal accounts. Upload a square of 640 × 640 px: Meta's business documentation recommended it and said WhatsApp keeps nothing larger. It shows as a circle in chats and as a full square when someone taps it.
What size should a profile picture be?
A square. 400 × 400 px or larger works almost everywhere, and Facebook asks for 320 × 320 px. If you want one file for every app, use 1080 × 1080 px saved under 2 MB, which is X's limit.
Is a profile picture a circle or a square?
You upload a square, and most apps show it as a circle cut from the middle. WhatsApp shows the full square when someone opens it, X uses a square for verified organisations, and LinkedIn company logos are square.
How do I put a full photo as my DP without cropping?
Fit the whole photo inside a square with a background behind it, then upload that square. In our Profile Picture Maker, tick the option to zoom out and fit the whole photo and pick a background colour.
Why is my profile picture blurry?
Usually the photo was too small or already compressed, for example a screenshot or a picture forwarded on WhatsApp. Start from the original photo, crop it to a square at the size for your app, and upload that.
