What engagement rate measures
Engagement rate is the share of your audience that interacts with a post. By followers, it's likes + comments + shares + saves, divided by followers, times 100. By views, the same interactions are divided by the number of views. Brands use it because it shows whether an audience pays attention, which follower counts alone don't.
The two methods give different numbers. By-followers is the classic Instagram figure and suits feed posts. By-views suits TikTok, Reels and YouTube, where many viewers don't follow you. When you quote a rate to a brand, say which one it is.
Engagement falls as accounts grow, so a good rate depends on your size: a few percent is typical for small Instagram accounts and under 1% for very large ones. The usual ranges here are rough figures from public industry reports as of October 2026. Niches differ, so use them as a guide rather than a grade.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?
By followers, roughly 1–3% is typical for accounts with 10,000 to 100,000 followers. Smaller accounts often see 2–5%, and accounts over a million usually see under 1%.
How do I calculate TikTok engagement rate?
Add up the likes, comments, shares and saves on a video and divide by its views, then multiply by 100. Dividing by followers gives a higher, less meaningful number on TikTok because most views come from people who don't follow you.
Should I use one post or several?
Several. One viral or quiet post skews the result. Add up the interactions on your last 10 or so posts, enter that total and the number of posts, and the calculator averages them.
Do views count as engagement?
No. Views are reach, not interaction. They are the bottom of the fraction when you calculate by views.
