Social Media Character Limits

The character limits for posts, captions, bios, names, usernames and hashtags on X, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, Threads, Bluesky, Facebook, Pinterest and Mastodon, and how each one counts emoji. For most posts, the point where the app cuts your text off with “more” matters more than the limit.

The short answer

X post
280 (25,000 with Premium)
Instagram caption
2,200, about 125 before “more”
Instagram bio
150
Instagram hashtags
5 per post
TikTok caption
4,000
LinkedIn post
3,000, about 210 before “see more”
YouTube title
100
Threads / Bluesky post
500 / 300

Limits for posts and captions

Spaces, line breaks, hashtags and mentions all count. X Premium subscribers can post up to 25,000 characters, but the timeline still cuts long posts short. Threads posts stop at 500, but you can attach up to 10,000 characters of text to one.

TikTok's 4,000 applies in the app; scheduling tools that post through TikTok's API are reported to stop at 2,200. Facebook doesn't publish its limit; 63,206 is the widely reported figure. Pinterest's own specs now give 800 for descriptions; 500 is the long-standing limit and the safe choice. Mastodon servers can set their own limit; 500 is the default.

Bios, names and usernames

Profile fields are much shorter than posts. A LinkedIn headline takes 220 characters. Many platforms don't publish these limits; figures marked “reported” are what the apps enforce in testing and what most guides agree on.

Bluesky's handle is a domain name, such as you.bsky.social. Mastodon raised display names from 30 to 40 in version 4.7; smaller servers may still be on 30.

Hashtag limits

In December 2025 Instagram announced it would cut the limit from 30 to 5 hashtags per post or Reel, rolling it out gradually. Meta's developer documentation still says 30; keep to 5. YouTube ignores every hashtag on a video with more than 60, and shows up to 3 by the title.

Threads allows one topic tag per post, up to 50 characters. Bluesky has no set number of hashtags in the text, plus up to 8 extra tags of up to 64 characters each.

Why the “more” cut-off matters more than the limit

Few people tap “more”. On Instagram only about the first 125 characters of a caption show in the feed, and on LinkedIn about 210 before “see more”, fewer on a phone. Everything after that is read only by people who were already interested.

So put the point of the post in the first line, and push hashtags and links to the end. YouTube titles are cut off in search at about 60–70 characters, though the limit is 100; put the words people search for first.

No platform publishes these cut-offs except Pinterest; they vary with screen size, font and line breaks. Treat them as a guide.

How emoji and fancy fonts count

Apps don't count text the same way. X counts every emoji as 2, Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters as 2, and every link as 23 however long it is. Hindi and other Indian scripts count 1 per character on X. Bluesky and Mastodon count what you see, so any emoji is 1. Most other apps don't say how they count. Our counter counts Unicode characters for them, where an emoji with a skin tone counts 2 and a family emoji 5, so leave a margin.

Fancy fonts are not fonts: each letter is a separate maths symbol, so 𝗕𝗼𝗹𝗱 counts double on X. Screen readers may read them out letter by letter or skip them, and search doesn't match them, so keep them out of names and keywords.

How the same text counts on each platform
TextXBlueskyMost other apps
Hello (plain text)555
👍 (one emoji)211
👍🏽 (emoji with skin tone)212
👨‍👩‍👧 (family emoji)215
🇮🇳 (flag)212
𝗕𝗼𝗹𝗱 (fancy bold font)844
日本 (Japanese)422
Counted with our Character Counter's rules. Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn and Threads don't publish how they count emoji; Threads' developer docs say posts sent through its API count emoji by their bytes.

Too long? Split it into a thread

Without Premium, a post on X stops at 280. A thread of numbered posts is the usual way round it, on Threads (500), Bluesky (300) and Mastodon (500) too. Break at the end of a sentence, and make the first post work on its own: it is the only one most people see.

Common mistakes

  • Writing to the limit instead of the cut-off: a 2,000-character caption is fine, but its first line has to earn the tap.
  • Pasting old hashtag sets of 30: Instagram's limit is now 5.
  • Counting emoji as 1 everywhere: on X each one is 2, and family or skin-tone emoji count more in most other apps.
  • Using fancy fonts in names and bios: they count double on X and screen readers may not read them.
  • Relying on a limit for something you can't edit later: platforms change limits, so check in the app first.

Frequently asked questions

What is the character limit on X (Twitter)?

280 for most accounts and 25,000 for X Premium subscribers. Emoji count 2 and every link counts 23. Bios are limited to 160 characters and usernames to 15.

How many hashtags can you use on Instagram?

5 per post or Reel, since December 2025. It used to be 30. Put your most relevant tags first.

How long can an Instagram caption and bio be?

A caption can be 2,200 characters, but only about the first 125 show before “more”. A bio can be 150.

Does an emoji count as one character?

It depends on the app. X counts every emoji as 2; Bluesky and Mastodon count each as 1. Most other apps don't publish their rule; counted as Unicode characters, an emoji with a skin tone is 2 and a family emoji is 5, so leave a margin.

How long can a YouTube title and description be?

A title can be 100 characters and a description 5,000. Search results cut titles off at about 60–70, and only about the first 150 characters of a description show before “more”.

How long can a LinkedIn post be?

3,000 characters, but only about the first 210 show before “see more”, fewer on a phone. Headlines take up to 220.
