Why platforms count differently
Not every app counts characters the same way. X weighs them: ordinary letters count 1, Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters and every emoji count 2, and any link counts 23 however long it is, because X shortens it. Bluesky counts what you see as one character, so 👍🏽 is 1. Most other apps count Unicode code points, where some emoji count 2 or more.
This counter applies each platform's own rule, so a post that fits on Threads may still be too long for X. The limits are the published ones as of October 2026; apps change them from time to time, so check in the app before posting something you can't edit.
Some apps also cut a long caption short in the feed. Instagram shows about the first 125 characters before “more”, LinkedIn about 210 and YouTube about 150 of a description, so the counter flags when you're past that point.

280 for most accounts, and 25,000 for X Premium subscribers. Links count 23 and emoji count 2 toward it.
How long can an Instagram caption be?
2,200 characters. Only about the first 125 show before “more”, so put the important part first. Bios are limited to 150.
Why does my count differ from the app's?
Usually because of emoji or links, which apps count differently. This tool follows each platform's rules, but an app can change them without notice.
Do spaces and line breaks count?
Yes, on every platform. The “Without spaces” figure is there for forms and essays that ask for it.
