Why WhatsApp cuts your DP

A WhatsApp profile photo is always a square. Pick a normal phone photo, which is tall, and WhatsApp's square only covers the middle of it: heads, feet or the friend at the end of a group photo get cut off. People call the fix a “full DP”: the whole photo placed inside a square first, with a plain or coloured background filling the gaps, so WhatsApp has nothing left to cut.

In the chat list and in groups WhatsApp shows your DP as a small circle, so the corners of the square are hidden there and the photo looks smaller. When someone taps your DP they see the full square. If you want your face to fill the circle instead, zoom in before you download.

Why 640×640

WhatsApp doesn't publish a profile photo size for personal accounts. Meta's documentation for its WhatsApp business API (since retired) said profile photos are scaled to a square of at most 640 pixels, so 640×640 is the most WhatsApp keeps; anything bigger is shrunk. The file is saved as a PNG, which WhatsApp then compresses once.

The photo is opened, framed and saved in your phone's browser. It isn't uploaded anywhere, and there's no app to install and no watermark.
