Bluesky Image Sizes, Video Limits and Post Length

Bluesky sets its limits in bytes, not pixels. A post holds up to 10 photos of 2 MB each, or one video of up to 10 minutes and 300 MB, plus 300 characters of text. Profile pictures and banners must be 1 MB or less.

Bluesky image sizes and file limits

Bluesky publishes no pixel sizes. What it enforces is a file size: 2 MB for each photo in a post and 1 MB for a profile picture or banner. Since the April 2026 update the app keeps post photos up to 4000 pixels on the longest side; larger ones are scaled down and compressed until they fit.

A photo keeps its own shape in a post: the post stores each photo's aspect ratio, so portraits, squares and panoramas all work. Profile pictures are cropped square and shown as a circle; banners are cropped to 3:1.

File limits from Bluesky's lexicons (app.bsky.embed.images, app.bsky.actor.profile); pixel caps from the Bluesky app's source and its v1.121 release post. A file limit of 2 MB is 2,000,000 bytes.

How many photos you can post

Since version 1.123 (8 June 2026) the Bluesky app lets you attach up to 10 photos to a post. Posts with 1 to 4 photos are saved the old way and shown as before; posts with 5 or more are saved in a newer "gallery" format and shown as a swipeable carousel.

Apps and scheduling tools that only know the older format still stop at 4 photos. Post Utils' own scheduler posts up to 4 for that reason. A post holds photos or a video, not both.

Bluesky profile picture and banner

Both must be PNG or JPEG and 1 MB or smaller. The app crops the banner to 3:1 and the profile picture to a square, and shrinks either to 2000 px if it's bigger. 1500 × 500 px is the banner size most people use; it is 3:1 and a JPEG of it fits under 1 MB easily.

The profile picture sits over the lower left of the banner, and the web profile shows a shorter strip of the banner than the app does, so keep text in the middle and to the right. Those positions aren't published; they're the Banner Maker's estimates from the current layouts.

Bluesky video length and file size

A post can carry one video of up to 10 minutes and 300 MB. Bluesky raised the file limit from 100 MB to 300 MB in June 2026 and the length from 3 to 10 minutes on 25 August 2026, so guides written before then still quote the old figures.

Bluesky also limits how many videos and how many bytes each account can upload per day. The app checks your remaining allowance before uploading; Bluesky doesn't publish the figures.

Post length and alt text

A Bluesky post holds 300 characters, counted as you see them: an emoji counts as one, however it's stored. For more, split the text into a thread. Names, bios and hashtags are in the Social media character limits guide.

Each photo and video can carry alt text of up to 2,000 characters in the Bluesky app.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a Bluesky image be?

There is no required size. Any shape works, the file must be 2 MB or less, and the app keeps up to 4000 px on the longest side. A JPEG 1080 to 2000 px wide looks sharp on phones and stays well under the limit.

How many photos can you post on Bluesky?

Up to 10 in the Bluesky app since June 2026. Apps and schedulers that haven't adopted the newer gallery format still stop at 4.

How long can a Bluesky video be?

Up to 10 minutes and 300 MB, one per post. Older guides say 3 minutes and 100 MB, the limits before June and August 2026.

What is the Bluesky banner size?

Bluesky publishes no pixel size: the banner must be a PNG or JPEG of 1 MB or less, and the app crops it to 3:1. 1500 × 500 px is the usual choice.

Why does Bluesky say my image is too large?

The file is over the limit: 2 MB for a post photo, 1 MB for a profile picture or banner. The Bluesky app shrinks big photos itself, so the error mostly comes from other apps and tools. Save as JPEG rather than PNG, or make it smaller.

What is the Bluesky character limit?

300 characters per post, with each emoji counted as one. Bios hold 256 and display names 64.
