How to Post a Full Picture on Instagram Without Cropping

Instagram keeps a photo whole only if its shape is between 1.91:1 and 3:4. To post a full picture, put it on a frame of one of those shapes first, such as 1080 × 1350 px or 1080 × 1440 px, with a border or blurred background filling the spare space.

Why Instagram crops your picture

Instagram's Help Center says photos keep their shape only between 1.91:1 (wide) and 3:4 (tall). A photo outside that range is cropped to fit, and one wider than 1080 px is shrunk.

Most phone photos are inside the range. Screenshots, Story-shaped pictures and panoramas are not, and they lose a lot.

Feed posts and carousels

  • Open No Crop for Instagram and add your photo. It sits whole on a 1080 × 1350 px (4:5) frame with a white border.
  • Keep 4:5, or pick 3:4 (1080 × 1440 px) so the post also shows whole on your profile grid.
  • Choose the background: a white border, any colour, or a blurred copy of the photo.
  • Download it and post it. When you pick it in Instagram, tap the expand icon so it isn't cut to a square.
  • For a carousel, add all the photos at once. Instagram gives every slide one shape and allows up to 20, so they all need the same frame.

A full-size profile picture (DP)

Instagram shows your profile picture as a circle, so the corners of any photo are cut off, even a square one. To show the whole photo, it needs space around it.

In No Crop for Instagram, choose 1:1 square and "Fit with a border", then set the border to 15%. The whole photo then sits inside the circle, whatever its shape. Upload it as your profile photo and don't zoom in.

To see the circle while you work, or add a coloured background, use the Profile Picture Maker. Sizes for every platform are in our profile picture sizes guide.

The border that keeps a whole photo inside the profile picture circle
Photo shapeBorder needed
Square (1:1)15%
Portrait (4:5)11%
Portrait (3:4) or landscape (4:3)10%
Portrait (2:3) or landscape (3:2)9%
Story or wide (9:16 or 16:9)7%
Worked out with the same fitting the No Crop tool draws: the border is a share of the square's side. A square photo needs the most, so 15% works for anything.

Stories

Stories fill a tall 9:16 screen: 1080 × 1920 px. A photo of another shape is shown smaller on a background Instagram picks, and if you pinch it to fill the screen, the edges are cut off.

To choose the background yourself, fit the photo on a 1080 × 1920 px frame first, with a border, a colour or a blurred copy of the photo, and add that to your Story as it is.

Keep text and faces away from the top and bottom, where Instagram puts your name and the reply box.

The profile grid and Adjust Preview

Since January 2025 your profile grid shows each post as a 3:4 rectangle, so even a post that is whole in the feed can be trimmed there. A 1080 × 1350 px post shows with 34 px off each side; a 1080 × 1440 px post is shown whole.

Adjust Preview (open the post, tap the three dots, choose Adjust Preview, then Fit or Fill) changes only how a post sits in its grid tile. It doesn't stop a photo being cropped when you post it, and it doesn't apply to profile pictures or Stories.

Frequently asked questions

How do I post a full picture on Instagram without cropping?

Fit it on a frame Instagram keeps, such as 1080 × 1350 px or 1080 × 1440 px, with a border or blurred background, then post that. When you pick it in Instagram, tap the expand icon so it isn't cut to a square.

How do I upload a full-size profile picture on Instagram?

Put the photo on a square with a 15% border so it fits inside the circle Instagram shows, then upload it without zooming in.

How do I post a full picture on my Instagram Story?

Fit it on a 1080 × 1920 px frame with the background you want, and add that to your Story. Pinching a smaller photo to fill the screen cuts its edges off.

Why does Instagram crop my photos?

Its feed keeps shapes only from 1.91:1 to 3:4 and crops anything wider or taller. The profile grid then shows each post as 3:4, and profile pictures are circles.

Does Adjust Preview stop Instagram cropping?

No. It only changes how a post looks in its profile grid tile. The post itself is cropped when you upload it if its shape is outside 1.91:1 to 3:4.
