How to Bold Text on LinkedIn

LinkedIn posts have no bold button. To make text bold, type it in a formatter that swaps your letters for Unicode bold letters, then copy and paste it into your post. It works in posts, comments, your headline and your About section, but use it on a few words only: screen readers and search can't read it like normal text.

  • Open the LinkedIn bold text generator and write or paste your post.
  • Select the words you want in bold and press Bold. Press Italic, Underline or a list button for other styles.

Why LinkedIn posts have no bold button

LinkedIn posts are plain text: the composer has no formatting toolbar. LinkedIn articles are different. Their editor lets you change the style, bold or italicise text and add lists, so for a long piece with headings, an article does it properly.

In a post, bold works because of Unicode. It includes whole alphabets of bold, italic and other styled letters, made for maths. They are separate characters, not formatting, so they survive a copy and paste and look the same on every device that has them in its fonts.

Text styles you can paste into LinkedIn
StyleLooks likeWhen to use it
Bold𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗱𝗜𝗻 𝘁𝗶𝗽𝘀Sans-serif bold, which matches LinkedIn's own text best. Use it for a hook or a few key words.
Italic𝘓𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘦𝘥𝘐𝘯 𝘵𝘪𝘱𝘴For a quote, a title or a single word of emphasis.
Bold italic𝙇𝙞𝙣𝙠𝙚𝙙𝙄𝙣 𝙩𝙞𝙥𝙨Strong emphasis. Use it rarely.
UnderlineL̲i̲n̲k̲e̲d̲I̲n̲ t̲i̲p̲s̲A line added under each character; it can look uneven on some phones.
StrikethroughL̶i̶n̶k̶e̶d̶I̶n̶ t̶i̶p̶s̶A line through each character: for a joke or a correction.
Monospace𝙻𝚒𝚗𝚔𝚎𝚍𝙸𝚗 𝚝𝚒𝚙𝚜Typewriter letters, for code or a figure that should stand out.
Unicode has styled versions of the basic letters A–Z (and, for some styles, 0–9) only, so letters such as é or ñ stay plain. Underline and strikethrough add a mark to any letter.

Where it works: posts, comments, headline and About

Styled letters are ordinary text, so they paste anywhere LinkedIn takes text: posts, comments, your headline (up to about 220 characters) and your About section. They count toward each field's limit like any other character.

Keep your name, job title, company and skills plain. Search matches plain letters, so a job title in bold is unlikely to come up when a recruiter searches for it.

Accessibility and search: use it sparingly

Screen readers may skip styled letters or read each one by its name, and search engines don't match them to normal words. Accessibility writers such as Per Axbom ask people not to fake bold this way. A few bold words in a post are a fair trade; whole sentences are not.

  • Bold the hook or two or three key words, not whole paragraphs.
  • Never style words people need to find: names, job titles, skills, hashtags.
  • Use plain bullet points (•) for lists. They are ordinary symbols and read fine.
  • If a reader can't see bold, the post should still make sense.

Put your hook before “see more”

A LinkedIn post can be 3,000 characters, but the feed shows only about the first 210, or three lines, before “…see more”, fewer on a phone. Bold works best there, on the line that makes people tap. Check a post's length in the character counter.

Frequently asked questions

Can you bold text on LinkedIn without a tool?

Not in posts or comments: LinkedIn has no bold button there. Articles have one in their editor. For posts, copy bold letters from a formatter and paste them in.

Does bold text hurt reach on LinkedIn?

LinkedIn hasn't said it does. The real cost is readability and accessibility, so keep bold to a few words.

Why does my bold text show as boxes?

The device reading it lacks those characters in its fonts, which happens mostly on older phones and computers. Most current devices show them.

Can I bold text on the LinkedIn app on my phone?

Yes, the same way: style the text in the formatter in your phone's browser, copy it, and paste it into the LinkedIn app.

How do I remove bold from a LinkedIn post?

Edit the post and retype the words, or paste the post into the formatter, press Plain to turn styled letters back into normal ones, and paste it back.
