Instagram Grid Size: The 3:4 Profile Grid Explained
Instagram's profile grid shows every post as a 3:4 rectangle. Make a post 1080 × 1440 px and it shows whole on the grid; the usual 1080 × 1350 px (4:5) post loses 34 px at each side.

- Reel cover 9:16
- 1080 × 1920 px: 240 px off the top and bottom

- Not possible
What size is the Instagram grid?
The profile grid has 3 columns and shows each post as a 3:4 rectangle, taller than it is wide. Instagram doesn't publish a grid size in pixels. 3:4 at 1080 px wide, the widest Instagram keeps, is 1080 × 1440 px.
A post of any other shape is cropped to its middle 3:4 on the grid. The whole post still shows when someone taps it. Instagram's Help Center gives 3:4 as the tallest photo it keeps in the feed, so a 1080 × 1440 px post shows whole in both places.
For feed, Story, Reel and profile picture sizes, see our Instagram post sizes guide.
| Post | Size | On the profile grid |
|---|---|---|
| Tall 3:4 | 1080 × 1440 px | Shown whole |
| Portrait 4:5 | 1080 × 1350 px | 34 px off each side |
| Square 1:1 | 1080 × 1080 px | 135 px off each side |
| Landscape 1.91:1 | 1080 × 566 px | 328 px off each side |
| Reel or Reel cover 9:16 | 1080 × 1920 px | 240 px off the top and bottom |
1080 × 1440 or 1080 × 1350? Why sites disagree
Ranking pages give three different figures for the new grid. They are all describing the same 3:4 grid, but they measure different things.
1080 × 1440 px is a 3:4 post at full width: the grid shows all of it. 1080 × 1350 px is the 4:5 portrait size, the tallest shape Instagram used to keep, and the grid trims it. 1013 × 1350 px is the part of a 4:5 post the grid shows.
Part of the muddle is Instagram's own. Its English help page now says photos keep their shape up to 3:4, but when we checked, the Marathi version of the same page still said 4:5. Guides copied from older or translated pages stop at 1350.
| Size | Shape | What it is | Quoted by |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080 × 1440 px | 3:4 | A 3:4 post at full width. Shows whole on the grid and in the feed. | Designpieces, Post Utils |
| 1080 × 1350 px | 4:5 | The usual portrait post. The grid hides 34 px each side. | SocialCal (labelled 3:4) |
| 1013 × 1350 px | 3:4 | The middle of a 4:5 post: what the grid shows of it. | Planoly |
When the grid changed, and whether you can switch back
Instagram tested rectangular profile grids from August 2024 and moved everyone over in January 2025. Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, said most uploads are now vertical, so cropping them to squares cut off too much. Some pages date the change to 2026; the news reports from the time say January 2025.
There is no setting to go back to squares. What you can change is how one post sits in its tile: open the post, tap the three dots, choose Adjust Preview, then pick Fit or Fill.
Since June 2026 you can also reorder posts on your grid. See how to rearrange your Instagram grid.
Planning posts for the 3:4 grid
- Make new posts 1080 × 1440 px if you care how they look on your profile. They show whole in the feed and on the grid.
- If you post at 4:5, keep faces and text away from the side edges: 34 px come off each side on the grid.
- Put a Reel cover's title inside the middle 1080 × 1440 px of the 1080 × 1920 px frame. The grid cuts 240 px from the top and bottom.
- Puzzle grids made of square tiles no longer join up. Remake them as 3:4 tiles.
- Preview a set of posts on a 3:4 grid before you post them, so the crop doesn't surprise you.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Instagram grid size in 2026?
Each post shows as a 3:4 rectangle, 3 to a row. Instagram publishes no pixel size; a post of 1080 × 1440 px fills a grid tile exactly and shows whole in the feed.
Is the Instagram grid 3:4 or 4:5?
The grid is 3:4. 4:5 (1080 × 1350 px) is a post size, not the grid's shape, so a 4:5 post loses 34 px at each side on your profile.
Why does my profile grid cut off my photos?
The grid shows only the middle 3:4 of each post. Square posts lose 135 px each side and Reel covers lose their top and bottom. Post at 3:4, or use Adjust Preview to choose Fit or Fill for a post.
Can I change my Instagram grid back to squares?
No. Instagram moved every profile to the 3:4 grid in January 2025 and has no setting to switch back.
Why do some sites say 1080 × 1350?
That's the 4:5 portrait size, the tallest shape Instagram used to keep; some translated help pages still say so. On the 3:4 grid it loses 34 px each side; 1080 × 1440 px doesn't.
