How to Add a Caption to Each Instagram Carousel Slide
Build your carousel in the Instagram app, tap Next until you reach the caption, choose Multiple captions instead of Single caption, then swipe through and write one for each photo or video. Instagram began rolling it out on 18 June 2026; reports differ on how fast it reached everyone.

What Multiple captions is
Until June 2026 a carousel had one caption for the whole post, so anything you wanted to say about slide 6 had to sit in the same block of text as slide 1.
Now, when you reach the caption step, Instagram's Help Center says you can "Choose Single caption to add one caption for your post, or Multiple captions to add a caption for each photo or video". A carousel holds up to 20 photos and videos, so a post can have up to 20 captions.
People who view the post see the caption for the slide they're on; it changes as they swipe. Single caption still works as before, and launch coverage describes it as the default.
How to add a caption to each slide
- Update the Instagram app from the App Store or Google Play.
- Tap Create (the +), tap POST, then SELECT MULTIPLE.
- Pick up to 20 photos and videos. The orientation you choose (square, portrait or landscape) applies to all of them. Tap Next.
- Add filters, and drag slides into order if you need to. Tap Next.
- Choose Multiple captions. Launch coverage describes this as a toggle or a drop-down in the caption area; the wording may differ between app versions.
- Swipe through the slides and write a caption for each one.
- Add a location (one for the whole post) and tag people in each photo if you want, then tap Share.
Who has it: the reports conflict
Instagram tested per-slide captions with some accounts in May 2026 and then started a wider rollout. Coverage from launch week disagrees on whether everyone got it on day one, so if you don't see the option you may still be waiting.
- If you don't see Multiple captions, update the app first.
- Check you've selected more than one photo or video: the option is part of carousel posting.
- If it's still missing after updating, the rollout may not have reached your account.

Write the captions while you make the slides
Per-slide captions work best when each slide carries one idea. Put the short version on the slide, where it's readable at a glance, and the detail, the example or the link prompt in that slide's caption.
The first slide's caption is what people read before they swipe, so treat it like a headline: say what the carousel is about and why it's worth swiping.
In the Carousel Maker each point you type becomes its own slide, so your list of points doubles as the outline for each caption. Instagram takes up to 20 slides, cover included. Check long captions in the character limits guide before you post.
Captions for a seamless panorama
A panorama split across slides reads as one picture, and a single caption can only describe all of it. With Multiple captions, each part can have its own line: the left of the view, the detail in the middle, the far end.
The Carousel Splitter cuts a wide photo into 2 to 20 slides that join up when people swipe. Write a caption for each slide in the order they're cut. For sizes, see Instagram post sizes and how to post without cropping.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add a different caption to each photo in an Instagram carousel?
Yes. At the caption step, choose Multiple captions instead of Single caption and write one for each photo or video, up to 20.
Why don't I see Multiple captions?
Update the app and make sure you've selected more than one photo or video. Instagram began rolling it out on 18 June 2026; some reports say everyone got it that day, others that it could take a week or more, so your account may not have it yet.
How long can each slide's caption be?
Instagram hasn't published a limit for each slide's caption. A post's caption can be up to 2,200 characters; keep each slide's caption short so it reads before people swipe on.
Can I add per-slide captions on a computer?
The Help Center's steps for a computer still describe one caption for the whole post, and no report mentions the option on instagram.com. Use the phone app.
Can I edit per-slide captions after posting?
Instagram's Help Center says that after sharing a carousel you can "edit your caption or captions" from the post's menu (Edit). It doesn't give separate steps for each slide.
