Glitch Text Generator (Zalgo Text)

Glitch text, also called Zalgo or creepy text, is your own letters with Unicode marks stacked above, through and below them. Type here to get 4 glitch styles in light, medium or heavy, re-roll the marks until you like them, and copy the result into Instagram, Discord, TikTok or anywhere you can type.

Updated

Tap Copy next to a style, then paste it into your app.

Glitch text (Zalgo)

Marks piled above, through and below each Latin, Greek or Cyrillic letter and digit. Every mark is a character, so heavy glitch text fills a bio limit fast.

How to make glitch text

1

Type your text

Enter a name, a word or a short line in the box. The glitch styles are right under it and update as you type.

2

Pick an intensity

Light adds a mark or two to each letter, Medium piles several above and below, and Heavy stacks them high enough to reach the lines around it.

3

Re-roll

Press Re-roll for a different set of marks. The letters underneath stay the same.

4

Copy and paste

Tap Copy next to the style you want and paste it into your bio, name, post or chat.

Glitch intensities

Light1–200–12–416–32 characters
Medium2–40–12–45–1040–80 characters
Heavy5–91–25–912–2196–168 characters
Read from the tool's own settings (lib/text/glitch.ts). Characters are Unicode code points, the way Instagram counts its 150-character bio limit; spaces and emoji get no marks. The one-zone styles add only that zone's marks, so Glitch through adds none at Light.

When people use glitch text

Glitch text makes ordinary words look corrupted or haunted: a creepy username for a horror account, a Halloween caption, a game or Discord name, or one word in a bio that looks broken on purpose. Because it's made of ordinary Unicode characters rather than a font, it survives a copy and paste and shows up for everyone who reads it.

The catch is length. Every mark is a character of its own, so glitch text uses up limits fast. At Light a letter becomes 2–4 characters; at Heavy it becomes 12–21, so an 8-letter name turns into 96–168 characters, which can be more than Instagram's 150-character bio limit. Use Light for a name or bio and save Heavy for a single short word.

How glitch text works

Unicode has combining marks: small accents that attach to the letter before them, used by languages such as Vietnamese. This tool picks from 99 of them, 49 that sit above a letter, 6 that strike through it and 44 that hang below, and stacks several on each letter. Glitch uses all three zones; Glitch rising, Glitch dripping, Glitch through use one each.

Marks go only on Latin, Greek and Cyrillic letters and on digits, where fonts draw them properly. Emoji, spaces and other scripts are left as they are, because marks would break them. A few marks are left out on purpose: some that apps rewrite as other marks when they save text, and two strike-through lines many phones show as boxes.

The marks are chosen by a seeded generator, so the preview doesn't flicker as you type and Re-roll just moves to the next set. Screen readers read glitch text badly or not at all, and search won't match it to the plain word, so keep anything people need to read or find in plain text.

Features

4 glitch styles

Glitch, Glitch rising, Glitch dripping, Glitch through: marks everywhere, only above, only below, or only through the letters.

Three intensities

From a light flicker over each letter to a heavy, dripping tower of marks.

Re-roll

A new set of marks at each press, with your letters unchanged underneath.

Fonts too

Bold, script, gothic, bubble and the other fancy fonts are under the glitch styles, plus slashed and underlined letters.

Frequently asked questions

What is Zalgo text?

Another name for glitch text: letters with many Unicode combining marks stacked above, through and below them, so they look corrupted. The name comes from an internet horror meme.

How do I make creepy text?

Type your word, choose Heavy and pick Glitch dripping for marks that hang below the letters, or Glitch for marks everywhere. Re-roll until it looks right and tap Copy.

Does glitch text work on Instagram, Discord and TikTok?

Mostly. It's plain Unicode, so it pastes into names, bios, posts and chats. Some apps trim tall stacks of marks or cap them, and every mark counts as a character, so Light is safest for a name or a 150-character bio.

Why does my glitch text look different on another phone?

The marks are drawn by the fonts of the device reading them, so heights and spacing vary. Very old devices may show some marks as boxes.

Can I use glitch text in my username?

Usually not. Usernames and @handles on most apps accept only plain letters, numbers and a few symbols. Put glitch text in your display name or bio instead.
